Asociación Pro-bienestar de la Familia Nicaraguense (Profamilia)
Profamilia is the largest NGO providing sexual and reproductive health care in Nicaragua. It operates sixteen clinics nationwide, offering a full range of services that include gynecological care, contraceptives, gender-based violence screening, and STI prevention, testing, and treatment. It also operates eight mobile health units that bring vital healthcare to poor and rural communities. In 2013, Profamilia provided more than 258,000 services.
Profamilia’s HIV prevention work focuses on reaching the most vulnerable groups—sex workers, men who have sex with men, and transgender people—and increasing the quality of services offered by health care providers. To address high adolescent pregnancy rates, Profamilia has also launched a series of activities to dispel myths and educate young people about sexual and reproductive health. The youth program aims not only to help young people speak out against violence and build equitable relationships, but also to educate mothers about gender-based violence and encourage them to seek support.
“What Profamilia is doing is a step in the right direction,” said a woman in Profamilia's gender-based violence support group. “It has been a breakthrough for me. Here, we are informing each other of the rights that one has as a woman."
