Asociación Dominicana Pro-bienestar de la Familia (PROFAMILIA)

Profamilia is the leading NGO providing a full range of sexual and reproductive health services in the Dominican Republic. It is known for its high-quality services, integrated care, and model clinics. Profamilia is a strong advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights and has pioneered important efforts in areas such as youth-friendly services, gender-based violence, emergency contraception, and the free provision of ARV therapy for HIV-positive clients. The organization has a comprehensive STI and HIV prevention, testing, and treatment program and operates mobile health units that reach extremely poor, displaced, migrant, and rural populations.

Profamilia has a well-established youth program that is national in scope. It provides comprehensive sexual and reproductive health information and specialized clinical services for young people throughout the Dominican Republic. Its clinical staff has been trained in the provision of youth-friendly services, and three of the clinics offer a dedicated space for youth.

Profamilia is committed to youth participation and leadership development at all levels of the organization. Young people are involved in the design, implementation, and evaluation of community programs and are active in a variety of capacities within the organization, including as peer educators, peer leaders, site coordinators, and members of the Board of Directors. The majority of Profamilia’s site coordinators are young people who were once peer educators, a testament to the strength and success of its youth leadership model.

Mobilizing and affecting public opinion and action to create a more favorable political and legislative environment for sexual and reproductive health and rights is at the heart of Profamilia’s advocacy work. It is a member of the National Health Commission and played a role in ensuring sexual and reproductive health was covered under the new insurance plans. Profamilia has also been extremely active in advocacy efforts around the issue of decriminalizing abortion.
