Asociación Pro-bienestar de la Familia de Guatemala (APROFAM)

APROFAM is the largest non-governmental family planning provider in Guatemala and has more than 40 years of experience providing sexual and reproductive health services. Operating through 27 clinics, APROFAM’s 3,000 community health promoters and youth peer educators fill service delivery gaps by bringing vital health care to people living in rural and marginalized communities throughout the country. Its integrated services include gynecological care, cervical cancer screening and vaccination, pre- and post-natal care, post-abortion care, family planning, contraceptive distribution, screening for gender-based violence, and STI prevention, testing, and treatment.

As a member of the Mesoamerican Coalition, APROFAM’s youth advocates campaigned to hold their government accountable and fulfill the promises they made by signing the Ministerial Declaration on comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly services. The young people have created educational campaigns about youth sexual and reproductive health and rights that have been disseminated through radio and television programs, comic strips, and local media.

APROFAM is part of Guatemala's national network for the prevention and eradication of gender-based violence and the Advocacy for the Eradication of Sexual Violence Project, an initiative that works throughout the region. It is a partner in a national project to decrease the rates of HIV infection among Guatemala’s most vulnerable and stigmatized groups, including sex workers, transgender people, MSM, and prisoners. They do this by providing access to condoms, offering HIV testing and treatment, and working to decrease stigma among health service providers. Additionally, APROFAM actively identifies new ways to educate men about the benefits of family planning and gender equality.
