Guyana Responsible Parenthood Association (GRPA)
Located in the capital city of Georgetown, GRPA is the leading provider of family planning services in Guyana. These services include gynecological care, Pap tests, contraceptives, screening and counseling for gender-based violence, and HIV and STI testing and treatment.
GRPA’s youth initiatives use a combination of education and recreational activities to promote its sexual and reproductive health services and recruit members for its youth advocacy group. They also engage in public information campaigns through radio appearances, lectures, discussions, poster displays, and brochures distribution. To be sure youth interests are represented at the highest decision making levels in GRPA, two youth members sit on the board of directors. One is the board president.
As a part of their HIV prevention campaign, GRPA devised a creative strategy for reaching women and men in their everyday environment. They actively collaborate with barbershops and beauty salons to deliver informed messages to the shop patrons about sexual and reproductive health, including HIV prevention strategies. Community health promoters debunk the myths about HIV and provide referrals to GRPA services. GRPA also does targeted outreach to the populations most at-risk for HIV infection, including sex workers, MSM, and youth.
