Centro de Investigación, Educación y Servicios (CIES)
CIES is an innovative and cutting-edge organization committed to improving access to sexual and reproductive health services for populations that are geographically isolated and disenfranchised in Bolivia. Its clinical services include screening for gender-based violence, gynecological care, contraception, youth-friendly services, HPV vaccination, and HIV and STI prevention, testing, and treatment. Its integrated model of care is comprised of health, psychosocial, and legal components.
CIES is involved in national-level advocacy related to maternal mortality and abortion. They participated in a working group to create a proposal for a law containing provisions for legal abortion and also completed three research projects that demonstrate the need to decriminalize abortion in Bolivia. CIES also participates in the Mesoamerican Coalition, an IPPF/WHR regional advocacy initiative focused on advancing the sexual and reproductive rights of youth. It has an ongoing public advocacy strategy that lobbies for reproductive rights, the extension of family planning education, and the expansion of preventive health care.
Cervical cancer mortality rates in Bolivia are among the highest in the world. From 2009-2011, CIES carried out a large-scale vaccination program to protect girls against HPV, the virus that causes cervical cancer.
