Asociación Chilena de Protección de la Familia (APROFA)
APROFA works to implement integrated sexual and reproductive health care and youth-friendly services. It has a partnership with the Red Cross to provide services at four Red Cross clinics and five youth-friendly community care centers. APROFA was the first family planning organization in the country to focus on underserved, impoverished areas. The majority of its clients receive free services and contraceptives.
APROFA prioritizes working with young people, especially those who are most vulnerable for teen pregnancy and STI or HIV infection. In the last decade the organization has put special emphasis on information and educational activities for teachers and students to promote sexual health education. Its programs include acceptance of sexual diversity.
Although Chile is one of five countries in the region that prohibits abortion under all circumstances, APROFA’s mission is to work toward the full decriminalization of abortion. They are an active member of a strategy group working to reinstate therapeutic abortion and have published a book entitled Aborto en Chile: Argumentos y Testimonios para su despenalizacion en Situaciones Calificadas (Abortion in Chile: Arguments and Testimonials for the Decriminalization of Qualified Situations).
