Asociación Panameña Para El Planeamiento De La Familia (APLAFA)
APLAFA is the leading NGO providing sexual and reproductive health services in Panama. It provides high-quality, integrated care at eight clinics nationwide and maintains an important presence in the country through advocacy, outreach, and communications campaigns. In 2013, APLAFA provided more than 256,000 services, including gynecological care, contraceptives, and HIV and STI prevention, testing, and treatment.
In Panama, many young people are denied access to comprehensive sexuality education and the right to make decisions about their bodies. As a result, teenage pregnancy rates remain high. To address this need, APLAFA runs Youth With Options groups throughout Panama to provide a safe space where young people learn about sexual and reproductive health, how to prevent sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, and how to advocate for their rights. Youth With Options reaches more than 8,000 young people across Panama each year.
“They were talking about sex and relationships, and the changes we were experiencing in our bodies,” says 15-year-old participant Yitzel Arcia. “They were talking about the most basic theme: how to take care of you. Yet, this wasn’t being talked about among my family or at school.”
APLAFA is recognized and respected by key allies, such as UN agencies and government decision makers, for its advocacy and technical expertise, particularly in the area of youth sexual and reproductive health and rights. Their growing work with migrants, refugees, and LGBTQ youth contributes to its reputation as a progressive and vital organization.
